"How much longer.... how long before I can rest? My days grow weary, my eyes desire rest. Many days since the collapse of the wall, since the break in, since the loss of.... too much. And I am stationed here, sentinel, watchman,.... friend, waiting for a signal from those distant shores, waiting for the banner to be raised; and the wave of an arm, the return of a friend....waiting for the homecoming that may never be. For how many more days must I keep signal at this outpost? Waiting, waiting.... on these storm lashed rocks, against the winds and tides from the east, against the calamities that my own land brings upon me; rain upon rain pours out upon me. It does not cease. And the wall stands in ruin; broken and left to wash away with the passage of time. Time, and time, and time.... and still the signal from those far off horizons fails to herald any return. And yet,.... the lamp still signals, the light still shines, the fire still burns. Smoldering, simmering, buried beneath the ground. It is there, it still remains: A coal in the fire."

-Sentinel’s diary, first watch.

Stand the Gap by ~Khylov gives a truely cold feeling that some of us maybe 'enjoying' right now. The soft color and emotion in this piece is breath taking. (Suggested by ~the-felix and Featured by `gatekeeper501)

I like how you use light. Also how he isn't looking straight ahead, like his thoughts are distracting him.

the artwork is so beautiful, sad and reflexive but done so blilliantly, the foreground is as always in your case just awesome, and the faraway fonny bakground is also amazing, it's done so simply yet reaveals such a depth of faraway horizons :sniff:
the quote sound very touching and beautifully, i wish i knew the whole story, i must click that link you put under the quote maybe that would explain what's the story, who's Sentinel, and generally hwat an awesome story inspired you to making such a beautiful picture :worship:
:iconlarem:
this is just fantastic. I love your coloring.
:iconlifenlove:
Great rain. my only question is how is it that the fire keeps burning? I mean I know there is something over it but wouldn't the rain leak through
:iconfrecklefaced29:
:omg: im so speechless. . . . . it's super awesome. :jawdrop: im super loving it. im asking you, are you going to make this animated film? the story is super great and beautiful! it reminds me of Hayao Miyazaki's films but you know what, your style is unique, gorgeous and different. :aww:

Dude, I really love this pic. The simple lines and the colors are great. His expression is one that would be expected of a sentinel in such weather. THe atmosphere, and the way you pulled it off is absolutely stunning.

If a man lives his life through to the end, and no one so much as noticed his passing, did he exist?

Am I a Man who dreams he was once a Wolf, or shall I, upon awakening, find that I am a Wolf who dreamed he was a Man?

Nice work! The text suits the picture very well!

. It was one of those days when it's a minute away from snowing and there's this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it, right? .
:iconrabidsquirrelninja:
i love how you color things: the palatte and the lighting. you make the whole picture enthralling.

Wow! The atmosphere that you achieved in this piece is amazing! It truly feels cold, wet and miserable. This is one of the better pieces you have done rescently. The sketching and the ditigal coloring are working very well together, and the illusion of depth is very convincing.
:iconkhylov:
Yeah, I thought about that too. Realistically, the sandals are so close to the embers, that they should be splitting at the soles. And, I could just say that the little cover he has over the pits are cleverly engineered enough so as to siphon the water away from the fire. But.... there was that thing I spoke of earlier, about coals that continue to burn, despite how many things there may be that would dampen them otherwise. Kind of fits in with the whole watchman's signal thing; keeping lookout for those ships on the distant horizon.

Now, here's the trick: If you can tell me the significance of the little lamp he has on the end of the pole (over his shoulder), then.... uh.... let's see; you win a prize! (Not applicable in all states; see details on back of box. Expires 1/06.) That, I think, will give you another angle to the whole thing. It might even answer your question. :]
